Synchronous belt, principle, characteristics, motion mode, tensioning method

1、 Principle of Synchronous Belt:
A synchronous belt is a flexible circular belt with teeth, and the synchronous pulley is machined with grooves that match the tooth shape of the synchronous belt. Power is transmitted through the meshing of teeth and grooves. There is no relative sliding between the synchronous belt and the synchronous pulley, ensuring synchronization between the two synchronous pulleys.
2、 Exercise mode:
1. Continuous transmission
2. Intermittent transmission
3. Reciprocating transmission

3、 Characteristics of Synchronous Belts:
1. Accurate transmission, no sliding during operation, with a constant transmission ratio:
2. Smooth transmission, with buffering and vibration reduction capabilities, and low noise:
3. High transmission efficiency:
4. Convenient maintenance, no need for lubrication, low maintenance cost:
5. Wide speed range, with a large power range of several watts to several hundred kilowatts:
6. Can be used for long-distance transmission, with a center distance of over 10m:
4、 Advantages of synchronous belts:
1. Excellent low-noise performance (the overall noise level of chain drive is 2-5B higher than that of belt drive)
2. Excellent stretching performance and good damping characteristics ensure the synchronization of the transmission
3. Simple Tensioning System Construction
4. The same belt can simultaneously drive other wheel system accessories
5、 Tensioning method:
(1) Parallel tensioning method: preferred

characteristic
The preferred method is to achieve tension solely through the pulling of two synchronous belts
Because it does not have an external tensioning structure, and the tensioning structure is also very compact.
The advantage of this approach is that it does not require the addition of additional mechanisms, which can save material costs, assembly costs, and reduce failure rates.
The fewer moving parts a machine has, the more stable it becomes.
(2) Outer tensioning method: last choice

characteristic
Outer tensioning is not highly recommended unless necessary:
1. Only applicable to low speed and low acceleration conditions;
2. It is prone to wear issues, such as surface smoothness and grinding powder, which are not the key control objects of manufacturers. In theory, rolling friction is used, but in practice, a combination of sliding friction and rolling friction is used. The outer surface of the synchronous belt is more prone to wave texture and is prone to wear;
3. Finally, it also increases production and maintenance costs, adds a moving component, and increases hidden dangers, making it unsuitable for compact working environments.
(3) Inner side tension method: secondary choice

characteristic
The inner tensioning wheel can be selected as an idler wheel or a synchronous wheel.
However, using an idler gear has its drawbacks, as the tooth surface is not smoothed and can cause vibration.
By contrast, using synchronous wheels yields better results but also higher costs.
In addition, the inner tensioning mechanism will cause the synchronous belt to protrude, thereby increasing arm space, which is not suitable for compact scenes.
Therefore, when choosing the internal and external tensioning performance, priority should be given to the inner tensioning wheel, which is more professional and practical.

Attention:
In institutional design, the use of tensioning wheels should be minimized as much as possible. Because the tensioning wheel in synchronous belt transmission will have a certain impact on its service life.
It is recommended to install the tensioning wheel of the synchronous belt on the loose edge of the transmission instead of the tight edge to achieve better results.
The following four situations require the installation of tensioning wheels:
1. The center distance cannot be adjusted by the movement of the driving and driven wheels, or the position is fixed and cannot be moved:
2. The large center distance causes the synchronous belt to jump:
3. Changing the spatial position of the synchronous belt: (such as avoiding certain parts on the transmission path)
4. Meet other design requirements,
5、 The function and application points of tensioning wheel
(1) The function of the tensioning wheel:
The tensioning wheel mainly plays the following roles in the synchronous belt transmission mechanism:
1. In places where the position of the synchronous belt pulley cannot be designed to be adjustable, it is used as a method of belt tension;
2. In larger gear ratios, increase the enveloping angle (number of meshing teeth) between the increasing diameter synchronous pulley and the synchronous belt;
3. In multi-stage transmission, increase the wrap angle and tighten the synchronous belt.
(2) Key points of application:
1. When the tensioning wheel is arranged on the inner side of the synchronous belt, it is obvious that the tensioning wheel must be a synchronous belt wheel with the same pitch, and it is usually installed on the loose side of the synchronous belt.
2. When the tensioning wheel is arranged on the outer side of the synchronous belt, as the outer side of the synchronous belt is usually smooth, the tensioning wheel does not need to be toothed, only a flat belt wheel that can rotate freely is needed. Its diameter must be greater than the minimum allowable number of teeth of the synchronous belt wheel diameter, and it must be installed on the loose side of the synchronous belt.
